One of the protesters' demands as they negotiated with Chicago over the parade route ... Was that they be allowed within sight and sound of the NATO summit at McCormick place.
If this route satisfied that, it's only on a technicality. As presidential Obama and his counterparts talked inside McCormick place, I was maybe the only reporter out here on the roof of McCormick looking west along 21st Street to the protest march.
In the distance, about a block away, I could see big fences. Another block down, a couple of cops in vests. And Then, about 4 blocks away, I could see the crowd. I could hear just faint chanting and a siren or two. But that's only if I strained my ears. Which, as I say, I seemed to be the only guy doing here at McCormick place. The people whose attention the protesters REALLY want ... were inside, well insulated from this expression of free speech.
